First the guide will tell you more about the Russian icons painted in 12th-17th centuries, which you will see in the Department of medieval Russian art. You will then continue the excursion on the upper floor.
All the periods of European art: classicism, sentimentalism, romanticism, critical realism and impressionism are well represented in Russia. When secular painting appeared in the country, (18th century) Russian artists started to paint portraits of Emperors and Empresses and members of the nobility. After viewing the fine portraits by Rokotov, Levitsky and Borovikovsky you will proceed to the halls dedicated to life and work of Briullov and Ivanov, whose masterpieces were created in Italy where many Russian artists lived and studied. Then you will hear about the founders of peasant life genre and critical realism in Russian art. Landscapes of Levitan and the historical canvases of Surikov and Repin came as a real phenomenon in the 19th century, along with the paintings of Nesterov, Polenov, Vrubel, Serov and Vasnetsov— members of the Abramtsevo art circle. One of them,Victor Vasnetsov ,decorated the facade of the beautiful building housing the Tretyakov Art Gallery. This year marks the 150th anniversary of Vasnetsov, and to commemorate the occasion, a special exhibition dedicated to his life and work is held in one of the rooms of the museum.
